Description
Herring Gull - The "Herring Gull" is a very common gull. It is larger than the "Ring-Billed Gull". It is a snow-white bird with grey wings and black wing tips with white spots. It is a coastal bird but will be seen inland at large lakes and other areas. You might even see a few at your local McDonalds or large parking lots. They will scavenge for food in local dumpsters and from people. They often feed on clams and other shellfish dropping them from heights to break their shells to get to the interior soft meat inside. They will also feed on fish, insects eggs and baby birds. They have a yellow bill with a red spot and pinkish legs. The juvenile is uniformly mottled brown to gray with a black bill. The Herring Gull will nest in colonies and return tot he same site year after year. They will sometimes migrate to coasts that remain unfrozen in North America.
This capture was taken in Milford, Connecticut.
