Grizzly Bears - Also known as the North American Bear. There are only about 1,500 left south of the Canada border. There are over 31,000 in Alaska. So be very CAREFUL when hiking thru Alaska!! They are known to dine on some plants, especially roots, berries, grasses, fruits, and forbs. When out on a hunt they will look for fish, mostly Salmon, rodents, moose, elk, caribou and deer. They are very good at catching the young moose & elk, etc. Sometimes they will go after farm animals.
Most Grizzly Bears die by the age of 25, but they can live to see 30. They can be found in woodlands, forests, meadows and prairies. They are known to like the areas near rivers and stream, especially if it has an abundance of ripen plants and fruits. They can run about 35 miles per hour for short sprints. They are good swimmers, which helps in catching fish. The cubs can climb trees, but will out grow that as they claws grow longer. The females can weigh approx 800 lbs and the males outweigh the females. The males can weigh up to about 1,700 lbs, twice the size of the female.
