The Mile High Swinging Bridge located in Linville, NC is a 228 foot steel suspension bridge that spans an 80 foot chasm at more than a mile in elevation. It is America's highest suspension footbridge. It was built in 1952 at a cost of $15,000. It was rebuilt in 1999, at a cost of $300,000.
It is calculated that more than 6 million people have visited the bridge. No matter how brave you are, if you are a person of normal imagination, it is impossible to approach the bridge without wondering if it COULD fall down, and wondering, if it could, might it not do so with you in the middle of it. Visitors would often hold back from stepping onto the bridge if one or two other people were already on it. There is a sign that the load limit is a 40 person limit. However the truth is, the bridge could hold 500 people with no trouble at all. Now you will see 15-20 people at a time on the bridge, but before the sign went up, there would only be 1 or 2 at a time and they would move very cautiously.
