Muskrat - Original Photography by Karol Livote
One day, I was observing and photographing some ducks in a local pond, when this guy came up and hung out for a little while. The muskrat can be found thru out the United States. They are rather common in Connecticut and the New England area, however, they are sometimes mistaken for a beaver. The muskrat is actually semi-aquatic rodent. They can be found in all types of waterways such as ponds, lakes, rivers, even the coastline and swamps/marshes. They feast on aquatic plants, including cattails, sedges, water lilies, arrowheads, and duckweeds. Occasionally, they will eat crayfish, snails, mussels, frogs, insects, and slow-moving fish. They are usually nocturnal but will be seen during the daylight hours. They live for about 1 to 4 years in the wildlife.
