Killdeer is a common plover and shorebird. Even though it is a shorebird, you can be sure to see this graceful plover in parking lots, lawns, golf courses and athletic fields.
These tawny birds run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they've startled up any insect prey. Their voice, a far-carrying, excited kill-deer, is a common sound even after dark, often given in flight as the bird circles overhead on slender wings.
This Killdeer was enjoying the early evening at Silver Sands State Park Beach in Milford, Connecticut. This is a protected species and during breeding season areas of the beach are roped off for the plovers, so they are not disturbed by the people.
