Southwest Ledge - Original Photography by Karol Livote
Southwest Ledge, located one mile offshore at the east side of the entrance to New Haven Harbor, in New Haven, Connecticut. It is a formidable obstacle, covered by only seven-and-a-half feet of water at low tide. It jets out on a breakwater that was built on top of rock formation so that mariners would pass thru safely by using the Ledge Light. However, it has been a danger with and without the breakwater. Over the many years, since it was completed in 1877, the discussion is whether to take it down because of the hazard it brings. Today, the Southwest Ledge Lighthouse provides a living laboratory, as an extension to the SCSU Werth Center for Coastal and Marine Studies program. Middle school, high school and college level students will all get a hands on experience at the lighthouse.
This was captured while out cruising the New Haven Harbor and the Long Island Sound. The city of New Haven is in the background scene.
