Description
As published by Maine Ahead magazine article by Henry Garfield Worth the trip-Mount Battie
In Maine, the difference between a hill and a mountain is often a matter of perception. Mile-high Mount Katahdin is clearly a mountain, but Mount Battie, at just 780 feet above sea level, isnt even the highest peak in Camden Hills State Park. Residents of Blue Hill, untroubled by contradiction or redundancy, refer to their towns 900-foot slope as either Blue Hill Mountain or simply the mountain.
But despite its small size, Mt. Battie looms large in the Camden consciousness. Its old stone lookout tower can be seen from Main Street; a vigorous hike of under an hour from downtown will reward you with spectacular views of Penobscot Bay and the distant hills/mountains of Acadia.
Where to begin your climb? A small, free parking area off Megunticook Street near the intersection of Routes 1 and 52 provides easy access to a foot trail that climbs through the woods before leveling out on the flat ledges surrounding the tower. The lower part of the trail is moderately steep, though not strenuous; a pair of boots or hiking shoes is a good idea.
If you have mobility problems, you can drive your car to the top of Mount Battie, using the state park entrance on Route 1 a mile north of town. Youll have to pay the park entrance fee ($3 for Maine residents, $4.50 for others), and youll miss most of the views available from the trail, and, alas, they dont sell bumper stickers that read This Car Climbed Mount Battie, so hike if you can.
