Red Bellied Woodpecker - Original Photography by Karol Livote
For those who do not know this type of bird, you are probably wondering why they call it a Red-Bellied when their heads are red? Reason is, they have a tinge of red on their bellies. The Red Bellied Woodpecker is a beauty with it's bright red head, tinge of red on the belly and the black and white feathers. They can be found in the woods/forests and backyards on the Eastern side of the United States. They eat seeds, nuts, insects including spiders, fruits, lizards and even sometimes minnows and more. They will come to backyard feeders if they are in the area. They have very interesting calls, including one that sounds like a shrill.
