East Rock Park is a park in the city of New Haven and the town of Hamden, Connecticut that is operated as a New Haven city park. The park surrounds and includes the mountainous ridge named East Rock and was developed with naturalistic landscaping.
East Rock is a 425-acre park located on the New Haven/Hamden border. The area was formed about 200 million years ago. Molten rock from deep in the earth surged through stress cracks formed in the sandstone bedrock of New Haven. The molten rock cooled to form dolerite (basalt or traprock). Glacial action and weather eroded away the softer sandstone, making East Rock (and other traprock ridges such as West Rock) became more prominent. The summit of East Rock Park now rises more than 350 feet above the floor of the Mill River Valley. Karol's story is quite simple: When she was about ten years old, her sister gave her the first camera she would ever use. She took right to photography and could be found capturing burned out buildings, old boats and whatever else she could find. In her high school days, she was hardly seen without a camera in her hand.
