Description
The Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States. They were once an endangered species, (now threatened) but has made a huge comeback since the 1970's, especially in the Unted States. This includes my home state of Connecticut. They are often seen soaring along the Housatonic River during the winter months. Their main source of food is fish, but are known to eat carrion and injured waterfowl, squirrels, rabbits, and muskrats. They are similar to the Golden Eagle. They are known for that amazing wingspan which is about 6-8 feet. The Bald Eagle is thought to mate for life unless, there is no success in breeding. They return to the same nest every year and continue to add sticks to it. The nests can weigh up to 1,000 lbs.
