What a day to visit Mohawk Mountain!!! I took a ride up the mountain on a nice day for a winter drive, only problem was it was a little bit chilly out!!! That is an understatement! It was a bone chilling one degree according to my car reading which did not give the wind chill affect. The wind was blowing about 25 MPH with gusts reaching 50 MPH & higher. I cannot express how COLD it was. Plus the high altitude from the mountain being 1,683 ft, you could not breathe! It actually hurt with every breath of air. Other cars came up the mountain but all did a quick turnaround without even stopping. There I was out in the breezy day taking in the views, or should I say trying to take in the views! I was unable to stay there for very long. Not sure when the tree in the background of the image fell, but it didn't surprise me with the winds up there, that a young tree was down.
The mountain views are beautiful, no matter what time of year you go. This mountain lets you view the Catskill, Taconic and Berkshire ranges.
There is a very interesting history about Mohawk Mountain: the Tunxis and Paugussett Indians would use smoke signals to warn local tribes of the approach of the dreaded Mohawk Indians. That is the reason of the name "Mohawk Mountain". The mountain and surrounding acres are located in the towns of Goshen and Cornwall. There are remnants of buildings and fireplace chimneys that can be found on the land that were once a camp from the 1930's.
Even though, it was so cold, it was a great day to get out and take a ride! Just another freezing winter day in New England!!
