Wood Duck: This duck has intrigued me since I saw a couple perched high in my back woods one day. Who would have thought you can find a duck in the woods. Most people would say there are bears, deer, wolves, squirrels and hawks and other bird species in the woods, but not a duck!! :>) The wood duck, named for the woods, is actually very quiet and can be found in shallow backwater ponds. They are often flying deep within a forest. They can also be seen perched high on tree branches. They were nearly extint around 1900, but today are doing very well. The male wood duck has a green head and crest and a red eye ring. His belly is white & the chest is rusty. The female has a bright white eye ring and is mostly all brown with the exception of a blue patch on the wing which is often hidden. They feed on seeds, plants and aquatic insects. They use to get the nerve to come to my bird feeders, when I had live on a pond. In the state of Connecticut they can be found mostly during the summer months and during the winter they head south.
